The nomination window for Uttar Pradesh BJP president closed at 3 pm with only one candidate in the race. Pankaj Chaudhary filed his papers without facing any challenger. No other leader submitted nomination documents. This cleared the path for his unopposed election. Party sources say the decision had central leadership approval. Chaudhary is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. His selection reflects organisational consensus.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally proposed Chaudhary’s name. Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak were present. Ten senior leaders signed as proposers. Their presence sent a strong political message. The show of unity ended weeks of speculation. It also highlighted coordination between government and organisation. The leadership wanted a smooth transition. No internal dissent was visible during the process.
The official announcement will be made on Sunday. Union Minister Piyush Goyal will declare the new president’s name. The event will take place at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University in Lucknow. Preparations are already underway. Party workers are expecting a grand but controlled event. The BJP wants to project stability. The leadership change will be positioned as strategic, not sudden.
Earlier, outgoing president Swatantra Dev Singh hinted at the new leader. Without naming him, Singh said the next president was a seven-time MP. He also described him as popular within his community. These remarks clearly pointed towards Pankaj Chaudhary. Political circles immediately read the signal. The suspense ended quietly. The party avoided public confusion. The transition was carefully managed.
Pankaj Chaudhary hails from Gorakhpur, Chief Minister Yogi’s stronghold. He is a seven-time MP from Maharajganj. His political journey began as a councillor. He later became Deputy Mayor of Gorakhpur. He entered Parliament for the first time in 1991. Currently, he serves as Union Minister of State for Finance. He also runs a business enterprise. His organisational experience is considered strong.
Political experts see caste arithmetic behind the decision. Chaudhary belongs to the OBC Kurmi community. Kurmis are the second-largest OBC group after Yadavs in Uttar Pradesh. BJP traditionally considers them a strong vote base. However, a section shifted towards the Samajwadi Party under the PDA narrative. BJP wants to prevent further erosion. The move aims to consolidate Kurmi votes ahead of elections.
If confirmed, Chaudhary will be BJP’s fourth Kurmi state president. Earlier leaders included Vinay Katiyar, Om Prakash Singh, and Swatantra Dev Singh. In Gorakhpur politics, only Yogi Adityanath and Chaudhary hold major influence. One handling government and the other organisation sends a clear signal. The party is preparing for panchayat and assembly polls. This decision reflects long-term planning rather than short-term optics.
